Marketing Metrics Without the Vanity

Views and clicks are not useless. They become useless when nobody knows what decision they support.

A vanity metric is a metric without a job

The same number can be useful in one context and misleading in another. Video views may help evaluate reach, but they do not automatically prove attention quality, audience fit, conversion, or business value. The issue is not the metric itself. The issue is the unsupported conclusion.

Build a measurement chain

A practical framework links activity to response, response to behavior, and behavior to an outcome. For example: content published, qualified reach, meaningful engagement, site action, lead, opportunity, customer. Not every business can measure every step perfectly, but the chain reveals what is known and where the gaps are.

Separate volume from quality

More traffic can hide weaker intent. More leads can hide lower qualification. More engagement can come from controversy rather than preference. Pair volume measures with quality measures such as completion, retention, repeat behavior, conversion rate, lead quality, or downstream value.

Use diagnostic metrics, not just scorekeeping metrics

A final outcome metric tells you whether performance changed. Diagnostic metrics help explain why. If conversion falls, the useful breakdown may involve device, landing page, source, audience segment, load time, offer, or form stage.

Respect attribution limits

Marketing journeys cross devices, channels, private conversations, and delayed decisions. Attribution models are useful approximations, not perfect records of human causation. Report what the model assumes and avoid treating a platform’s self-reported credit as objective truth.

End with the decision

Every report should close with the decisions the evidence supports, the decisions it does not support, and what should be tested or measured next. That is how metrics become management information.
